NEW for 2009 Sectionals and Regionals
As of July 1, 2008, match sponsors will no longer be required to ask for proof of NRA membership for any NRA Registered tournament. Sectionals and Regionals are NRA Registered tournaments. Competitors need to be NRA members to set NRA National Records, become a member of an Honorary Club, and to earn a NRA Distinguished Step. NRA member numbers will still be used for NRA Classification purposes. Competitors who are not NRA members will continue to be assigned a number for classification purposes only.

NRA Distinguished Rifleman Award
The NRA Distinguished Smallbore Rifleman Award can only be earned in competition in an Open Regional and National Championship (Indoor and Outdoor). One award is designated for the prone shooter and another for the position shooter. We are currently researching a special award for those few shooters who earn both the Prone and Position Distinguished Rifleman Awards (Double Distinguished).

National Records
We receive applications for National Records almost weekly. National Records cannot be recognized without the proper documentation, validation, and fired targets. According to the NRA Smallbore rifle Rules the National Record Reporting Form MUST be validated by either the Referee or a member of the jury. The Match director nor the Statistical Officer are authorized to validate National Records (Rule 17.5). Applications for National Records that are not complete will be returned to the Tournament Sponsor.

NRA Smallbore Rifle Light Rifle Program
The NRA Light Rifle is great program for shooters who wish to shoot competitively without the expense of the top-of–the-line equipment. Leagues are being formed for the fall and tournaments are being set-up. Want to try something fun and different – try light rifle.

Something New! There is a new course of fire that has been approved for Official Competition and for National Records. The NRA Smallbore Rifle Conventional 3-Position course of fire was approved by the Smallbore Rifle Committee a few years ago and has been a contributing factor in growing the number of shooters and tournaments. The difference between NRA 3-Position and NRA Conventional 3-Position is the target. The Conventional 3-Positional uses the NRA A-23 five bull target.

Tournament sponsors are being ingenious in their approach to setting up tournaments. One sponsor fired an NRA Regional on a Saturday using the NRA Conventional 3-Position course of fire and then shot another Regional on Sunday using the NRA 3-Position course of fire. At the end of the second day, the sponsor added the two aggregates together for a special aggregate.

Here at NRA Headquarters, we fire a tournament each spring called the Ken Quandahl/Spring Fling Tournament. We shoot the NRA Conventional 3-Position course of fire (120 shots) using insights. The twist, it is an indoor 50 yard tournament. The match is eight years old and draws 75-100 shooters annually from all over the country.
