NRA needs top-notch Senior Training Counselors to conduct Training Counselor Workshops. These Senior Training Counselors act on behalf of and represent the NRA Training Department Staff in the field. Active Training Counselors who meet high standards of technical and teaching qualifications and have displayed a positive, supportive attitude towards the NRA and its training programs may be invited by NRA Training Department staff, to apply to become a Senior Training Counselor.
Consequently, we are constantly observing Training Counselors to determine who possesses a sincere dedication to the NRA and its shooting programs. The example they set when training instructor candidates will directly affect the quality of instruction presented to students in the NRA Training Program. We are particularly looking for Training Counselors who are very active and who consistently follow NRA training processes and procedures very closely.
The minimum qualifications for STC candidate consideration are:
- Two years experience as an NRA Appointed Training Counselor.
- Currently be certified to teach pistol, rifle, shotgun, Home Firearm Safety and Range Safety Officer courses.
- Conduct four or more NRA instructor training courses. At least one instructor training course shall be conducted in each of the Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun discipline groups, training a cumulative total of at least 25 instructor candidates.
If you possess the minimum qualifications and NRA Training Department determines a need for STCs in your region of the country, the NRA Training Counselor Program Coordinator may contact you to apply for and attend a currently scheduled Training Counselor Workshop as an STC candidate. In areas of the country that have none, or very few Training Counselors, the NRA Training Department may assist you in sponsoring your own workshop. The NRA will select a Master Training Counselor to evaluate your workshop and make their recommendation to the NRA Training Department concerning your ability to be successful as an NRA Appointed Senior Training Counselor! Qualified individuals may not be contacted if an area appears to be saturated with STCs.
If you are approved for STC consideration you will be required to organize a workshop, recruit Training Counselor candidates, conduct presentations assigned by the MTC and complete all the administrative requirements for the workshop for at least six TC candidates. You must receive a favorable recommendation from the MTC evaluating your workshop for NRA Training Department consideration.
Upon completion of the TC Workshop, STC candidates have ten business days to submit all the appropriate workshop administrative items, such as individual TC candidate evaluations, TC applications and fees, TC reference letters and signature cards to the NRA Training Department. STC candidates should remain in contact with their students to ensure their credentials have been received in a timely manner (four to six weeks). Training Counselor workshops will not be considered complete until all prospective Training Counselors who successfully completed the STC candidate's workshop have received their credentials.
NRA Training Department will evaluate the recommendation of the MTC, especially in regard to the STC candidates' ability to counsel prospective Training Counselors before, during, and upon completion of the workshop, their knowledge of the NRA and their attitude towards the NRA and the many programs available. NRA Training Department will also consider past performance as a Training Counselor and your reputation supporting the NRA Training Department. We will evaluate all resources available in our decision process concerning your ability to represent NRA as a Senior Training Counselor. Recommendations will be submitted to the Manager, NRA Training Department and the Director, Education & Training Division for his approval/disapproval. STCs will be appointed for a period of five years; however, performance and activity will be re-evaluated annually. STCs who do not participate in a Training Counselor Workshop during their five-year appointment will relinquish their appointment as an STC.
